Nodaway Trail

Nodaway Trail

Series: The Trail, Book 2

Written and Narrated By: David R. Lewis

Length: 6 hrs and 30 mins

Reckon so’s it’s kindly likely I’m agonna be hittin’ the Trail with Lewis again pretty dadgum soon…!

Okay, so here it is: “The Trail” series was highly recommended by an AWEsome Accomplice, and I soooo loved the first, Deer Run Trail, I was tempted to start a binge-listen fest. Ahhh noooo, I told myself: Draw this series out, enjoy and savor each audiobook (And seriously: Audiobook it must be. I’m sure it’s absolutely enjoyable in print, but the narration by author David R. Lewis makes this something stellar: Gets to where you’re dribbling and drawling with a twang yourself by story’s end!).

But got a Comment that this, Nodaway Trail, was just as good, and I entered into the Listen all giggly and sans composure. Uhm, which is to say I DIVED into it!

And I was tickled near ‘bout to death.

It’s about a year since we last seen young Ruben Beeler, and not only are he and Miz Harmony still an item, but they’ve been married for some time, and Harmony will soon be having the couple’s first baby. Ol’ Pappy Rube, as Homer Poteet would say. Rube, nowhere near 21-years old yet, is still Sheriff of Deer Run, and things are mighty swell with him and his Deputies, nary a major dustup to be had.

All going swimmingly… until…. enter Marion Daniels, US Marshall extraordinaire and Rube’s good buddy. Marion is heading out to round up two guys wanted for murdering one woman and mutilating another, but they’re from a bad lot, have kinda sorta decimated posses, and Marion ain’t looking forward to meeting them on his own. NATurally, Rube is JUST the man to deputize, and what with Harmony knowing just how Ruben is, she’s okay with him joining the Marshall and having him hit the trail.

Things get topsy turvy, Homer Poteet winds up coming back for this book, and Arkansas Bill Cole winds up being a tearjerker of a story. As always, there are plenty of shootings, bits of death and mayhem that’s topped off with jovial quips and jaunty interstitial music. If you’re all squirrelly about violence, I dunno what to tell you about this/these books cuz that’s just the Western way. Nothing is too gory, nothing gets graphic, but be prepared for stuff like Harmony getting soooo mad at what a dead man near ‘bout did to her man that she blasts his corpse with a good ol’ shot from her rifle.

That’s just the Western way…!

Wonderful story, chockfull of humor and good friends jawing at each other (And I laughed until I cried when ol’ Arliss hears about his namesake for the first time!), and lots and lots of action. Add to that touches of warmth and a few tears? Loved it!

Which brings me to my problem: Cuz, see? I know I SAID I’d wait and savor each one; but I dunno that I’m gonna actually be able to do that. I don’t want anything to get all fuzzy; I want each detail from each book MEGA-fresh in my mind, and dad-blast it: Whadda ya expect of me?!?

I flunked The Marshmallow Test when I was a tiny tot, so maybe this is just par for the course… Which means, do stay tuned for the next in the series sometime soon.

Cuz these are so good I can’t be held responsible for listening to all of ‘em right quick!
