Miss Tonks Turns to Crime

Miss Tonks Turns to Crime

Series: The Poor Relation, Book 2

By: Marion Chesney / Narrated By: Davina Porter

Length: 4 hrs and 44 mins

Does the fearful Miss Tonks fail miserably? Why, nooooo!

The poor relations have fallen on hard times yet again, and they need money to keep their hotel, The Poor Relation, afloat. Naturally, that means someone must go to a relative for a visit… to pilfer something to be sold.

Miss Tonks draws the short straw, so it’s off to spend time at her cold-hearted sister Honoria’s abode. Whilst there, her spinster status awes her niece, and a new novel stirs her imagination. She is inspired to dress like a man and, yes: She WILL become a highwayman, and she WILL hold up her sister’s coach, and she WILL take Honoria’s diamond necklace and tiara.

Uhm…

Things don’t quite work out that way. But a robbery does indeed take place; our hero sees to that. And the niece does declare her independence. And Miss Tonks is sent away by Honoria because, obviously, it’s all her fault.

Back at the hotel, the necklace and tiara are a hit; the fact that the niece has run away and thrown herself into their lot is a bit more disconcerting.

Miss Tonks Turns to Crime is about niece Cassandra helping out, spying on other hotels, making mischief, and being stubborn about love. It’s about the hero’s engagement with another young miss and the hijinks Cassandra and the poor relations drag him into (But actually? He kinda sorta likes it; life would be boring without all those scrapes they get into).

Davina Porter? Awesome job yet again in this, Book 2 of The Poor Relation series (Don’t forget Book 1, Lady Fortescue Steps Out!). She delivers everything so well, nuanced perfectly, so that you guffaw when you’re supposed to guffaw.

My only problem is with the end as I didn’t like the way the new young couple handle miscommunication and conflict. Like, I REALLY did NOT like either of them at that point. But if you consider the whole book sans that ridiculous ending, it’s yet again a fun, fun book.

I do like Miss Tonks. So happy to see her blossom even after failing and weeping copiously into her manly clothing!
