Lights & Laughter: Joel ben Izzy Spins Hanukkah Tales

Written and Narrated By: Joel ben Izzy

Length: 1 hr and 13 mins

A very short review for a very short and delightful audiobook

What would Hanukkah be without getting an audiobook by Joel ben Izzy in? It would be dull and boring, and there wouldn’t be anywhere neeeear the amount of laughs that Life requires.

Joel ben Izzy, if you’ll remember, wrote the absolutely wonderful Dreidels on the Brain which so touched me last year. When I saw Lights & Laughter on sale, saw that it was from and narrated by ben Izzy, I snapped it up in a heartbeat. And I was not disappointed.

Many, many people have told me the story of Hanukkah, but I’ve only listened with not even half an ear, more like a sixteenth of one because listening is kinda sorta one of those things I have to work on. As such, I’ve only known the broadest of strokes of regarding The Festival of Lights. But with this audiobook right here, I am oh so grateful to say that I FINally know what happened waaay back when where the bit of undefiled oil was left but was only enough to burn for a single night.

This story, the story of The Maccabees, is told to a live audience by ben Izzy to what sounds like mostly children. He makes the story exciting, with plenty of whimsical asides sure to delight children but irreverent enough to entertain their parents. Other stories are told in the same fashion, plus there’s happy, celebratory music by a live band, The Kings of Klezmer in between stories.

If you’re looking for a few laughs this Hanukkah, you simply canNOT go wrong with ben Izzy.

Besides, who can say no to a song called, “Dance of the Drunken Dreidel”?!?
