Dare To Lead: Brave Work, Tough Conversations, Whole Hearts

Written and Narrated By: Brené Brown

Length: 8 hrs and 10 mins

Lead? Who, me?!?

I just saw the ad, Brené Brown, and I couldn’t hit Pre-Order quick enough. I adore the woman. I didn’t even look at what it was, so I was totally surprised that the book is classified as Business.

Hmmm…. Woulda thunk that’d be enough for me to completely regret buying it.

I don’t regret a thing.

With Dare to Lead, Brown has managed to bring the strongest elements of each of her books together and unify them in such a way that, no, you don’t need to be business-minded to get it: You just have to want to be a better person.

Sure, there’s a lot of business jargon that had me scratching my head in confusion, but being who I am, I simply shrugged it off and listened to the meat of the audiobook.

And may I say that earlier audiobooks that Brown has narrated herself were a bit weaker and suffered from a certain wooden-like delivery? She seemed uncomfortable in the booth before, and that’s why I preferred the “live” workshop audiobooks she had. Because she is one funny, irreverent woman. Well, here with Dare to Lead, she’s discovered her inner ease, and the delivery is flawless, warm, witty to the max. She delivers research statistics with the same unholy joy that she does ribald Texas-sized personal stories.

Besides being classified as Business, the audiobook is also classified under Leadership, and aren’t we all leaders in some way? Aren’t we all parts of a team in some aspect of our lives? Personally, I have to get a tremendously large group of teen-aged girls off in the morning prepared for the day and, hopefully, ready to face it all upbeat and in fine form. I need skills, I tell you: Skills!

Here you’ll learn the difference between leading from your hurt (are you passive aggressive because of past trauma, slights somewhere along the way?) and leading from your heart. You’ll learn how to utilize vulnerability, how to give and receive feedback, how to share and delegate power, and how to hand off jobs according to people’s strengths. You’ll learn how to be empathetic (and I gotta say it: I learned as much about how to approach those who have suffered devastating loss from this book as I did from Option B).

The best part is, you can go to Brené’s website and download lists, forms, checklists, anything you need, all without having to buy anything else.

At just over 8 hours, you’ll find the best, most integrated passel of goodies from each of her previous books and workshops. I learned a lot, and I enjoyed it the whole time. In the past, I felt I’d learned from this guru from Houston, but it all seemed segmented and fragmented. With Dare to Lead, it all seemed to come together.

You lead SOMEwhere in your life. Give yourself the chance to do it properly, do it well, do it in a manner that’ll make you a better, less stressed-out individual. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, even the stats, even the jargon.

Aren’t we all just people, people, people?
