A Cat Abroad

A Cat Abroad: The Further Adventures of Norton, the Cat Who Went to Paris, and His Human

By: Peter Gethers / Narrated By: David Laundra

Length: 7 hrs and 32 mins

Oh man! How I wish my own cats were as inquisitive and mellow as Norton!

But perhaps it’s the breed? The. only Scottish Fold cats I’ve met have seemed really amazingly intelligent and aware. Okay, I’m feeling sorta guilty now for throwing my cats under the bus. But really, A Cat Abroad is nothing but stories of the outta this world, Norton. The cat walks at the side of his owner, Peter Gethers, and Gethers doesn’t even have him on a leash.

Norton also has a pretty spectacular palate which serves him well, as abroad, he is welcomed into many a fine dining establishment, with chefs falling all over themselves to make him dinners and desserts that will have him mawing down on their cuisine. All those scenes really stuck with me cuz they’re pretty gosh darned sweet. The audiobook has you right there with Gethers and his spectacular cat.

I think the narration by David Laundra really added to the audiobook’s likability factor. The man makes it sound as though it really is coming from Gethers’s own mouth. The humor is there, the sometimes worry, the exasperation, the utter delight that comes through the many, many stories. And if Norton suffers, Gethers suffers, and it all comes through with the nifty narration.

This book was written in an earlier time, so expect some not very politically correct language (it’s extraordinary how one can get sensitive to such stuff) that had me gasping a bit. He has no problem bandying about Jews, Japanese, and even Clarence Thomas (whom he obviously dislikes, like, really, really dislikes). But that’s just here and there, so I doubt I can classify this audiobook as offensive on any level—just took me by surprise here and there, that’s all.

If you’re looking for a nice light listen, something with a lot of humor, give A Cat Abroad a try. There are no deep revelations or heavy thoughts. There’s just wonderful, fantastic, unbelievable Norton.

Oh, yeah. And a few humans thrown in, but at least they don’t detract from what’s really important!
